Abstract: The paper proposes a comparative analysis of the activities and income of co-operative banks and commercial banks in Greece by examining the balance sheet and the statement of income during the period 1994-1999. Greek co-operative banks have a very strong proportion of credit activities compared to commercial banks, which is also reflected in the income. Co-operative banks in Greece are borrowers dominated. Cooperative capital has a strong proportion in liabilities and part of it is used to cover the loan demand. Co-operative banks presented very high level of capitalization and high levels of profitability. Co-operative bank's activity is influenced, although, by legislative restrictions, the limited development of the network of bank agencies, the lack of a mature central co-operative bank and the absence of a guarantee funds system.
